Thvorusleikir.....Spoon-licker and Names

Thvorusleikir...Spoon-licker likes to lick the wooden spoon, that is used to stir the pots. When he sees his opportunity he shoots into the kitchen and grabs the spoon and holds it tight with both hands. This poor fellow is long and skinny and always hungry, as there is not much nourishment on a wooden spoon. Today he was lucky as you can see and has licked the spoon until it is clean.

It is interesting to me how many translations of the name Jolasveinar there are. I have come across Yulelads, Yuletide Lads, Yule Goblins, Christmas Elves, Christmas Men and Christmas Lads. I am sure there are many more.
There have been over 80 recorded names for the Jolasveinar themselves describing their looks or their tricks. I wonder why names such as Bandaleisir....Strap looser, Faldafleikir....Skirt blower this name I have also seen translated as Skirt flipper
Hlodustrangi....Barn roll, have the Jolasveinar become more politically correct?

Great work, Mo'a. Your characters are very vivid and entertaining to look at.

We're coming up on "Meat Hook" pretty soon, no? I'm sure he'll be adorable and charming, too -- but I can't get the image of Freddie Kruger out of my mind...

Thank you Al. Meat hook will be one of the last ones to arrive...LOL Freddie Kruger...
I will warn you so that you can lock your doors....he particularly likes smoked lamb...so if you have some, put it under lock and key.

i'm waiting for the one that's dipped in chocolate.

loveloveLOVELY, Mo'a! and interesting to know of the newer -- possibly "politically correct" -- variations of names. however, is "skirt flipper" really better than "skirt blower"? i'm not so sure... xoxox

If I had any smoked lamb it would be for dinner tonight! Sadly this Christmas we won't have any at all, since we haven't imported any from Iceland recently, and Bjarni's daughter won't be back until after Christmas.. wonder if I could get her to bring some back for us? Yum. Spoon Licker is cute!

Mmmmmmm that sounds good....would you eat him? :)
Skirt blower....I can see him in my minds eye....perhaps I should have a goal to create 80 Jolasveinar....Noooooo!!! that is too much even for me :)

Have Bjarni's daughter bring Hangikjot a year without smoked lamb, is not a complete year :)

Poor guy - he is rather skinny. Send him over, I'll feed him - I can't take someone groveling for food.

As long as they're not also known as The Village People, I think we're okay.

Hello G: That is a Jewish Mother for you :) ....he is probably at your house in his place is Pot-scraper...so if you have any pots that need washing just wait for him.

No not The Village People....they are The Mountain People aka Trolls.

Blogger must get their act together....but we can outsmart them......we are The City People

I held the pots out for Pot Scraper Mo'a - a lot of them as we needed to do a bit of cooking for hungry skinny Spoon Licker!
